Applying for an Employer Identification Number (EIN) should be a straightforward process, but many business owners run into frustrating errors. Understanding these error codes can help you avoid unnecessary delays and get your EIN quickly.

What is an EIN and Why Do You Need One?

An EIN is a unique nine-digit number issued by the IRS to identify your business for tax purposes. Whether you’re starting a new company, hiring employees, or opening a business bank account, having an EIN is essential.

📌 Reference Number 101 – Name Conflict/Duplicate

The IRS found a business name too similar to yours. ✅ Solution: File Form SS-4 by mail or fax with your approved LLC formation documents.

📌 Reference Number 102 – SSN/ITIN Mismatch

There’s an issue with the Responsible Party’s SSN or ITIN. ✅ Solution: Double-check your SSN/ITIN and try again. If it persists, submit Form SS-4 by mail or fax.

📌 Reference Number 103 – EIN Mismatch

You entered an existing EIN as the Responsible Party and the IRS records don’t match. ✅ Solution: Verify the EIN and business name before trying again.

📌 Reference Number 104 – Third-Party Designee Conflict

A Third-Party Designee used the same address or phone number as the LLC. ✅ Solution: Ensure the Third-Party Designee’s contact details are unique from the LLC’s.

📌 Reference Number 105 – Too Many Attempts

The system locks you out after multiple failed attempts. ✅ Solution: Wait 24 hours and try again.

📌 Reference Numbers 109-113 – Technical Errors

IRS system issues or high traffic. ✅ Solution: Wait 24 hours and retry. If it persists, contact the IRS or submit Form SS-4.

📌 Reference Number 114 – EIN Limit Reached

The IRS only allows one EIN per Responsible Party per day. ✅ Solution: Wait 24 hours and apply again.
